A Midlife Journey Beyond the Glam in Content Creation

Unveiling the real me

Welp, Here I Am Again in the Vlogging/Blogging Sphere

I’ve been pulled back in this direction, not because I have to, but because I genuinely love doing it. Sometimes, though, it can be defeating when you put in so much work and see very little traction. However, I’ve learned a few things during this midlife journey: reflection is key, and trial and error is part of the human experience.

As a middle-aged black woman, life as we know it isn’t the same. Technology has advanced, food is different, and don’t even get me started on the music — blah! Well, not all of it, but a nice portion!

When it comes to content creation, it’s not your Myspace type of experience — yes, I’m that well-seasoned! It’s a lot more spectacle-driven than in the 80s and 90s because social media thrives on what’s trending and popular.

Don’t get me wrong, we had our “popularity trends” like baggy jeans and colorful reeboks, but today, it’s to the point where people are bending over backward to entertain rather than share a message.

Where are the messages?

Experience over Fluff

I grew up watching shows such as A Different World, Punky Brewster, and Full House. They were entertaining, but for the most part, they made you reflect on an issue that arose, taught you about community, and navigated through emotions via active listening. And yes, there were times of foolery and hearty laughter.

Social Media and its influencers have a knack for entertaining, but what are we truly learning? Where is the enriched content? From makeup tutorials and how to dress for any occasion to renditions on dealing with neighbors — believe me, they exist — this makes up a nice portion of the content on YouTube and other social platforms.

Yes, these things are great, but what about real-world life lessons? I don’t mean the spiritual/healing community that teaches about high vibrancy and trauma — which are also good. I mean the raw, down-to-earth, in-your-face content that’s relatable to today’s way of living! Where is the content that talks about rebuilding life and shares the process, not just the glam-up? Where are the videos that show vulnerability and resilience? Where is the information that shows more humanness than faux facades and fluffy pristine backgrounds? Where are those?

This is the content that I’ve been creating for 2 years, that audacious type of content that shows what it’s like to be human behind closed doors. I want to show the world, especially my midlife ride-or-die squad, that yes, this stage is hard, intriguing, amazing, scary, and a whirlwind of emotions. But I’m also doing it through trial and error, reflective lessons, and out-of-the-box thinking. I’m here rocking this badass era, from the unorthodox trenches, and I want to share my journey to show that life on the internet isn’t always a fluffy container of glitter! It’s a mix of it all — the good, the bad, the ugly, and the glam! I don’t want to cascade this persona that’s not truly me because the point of this newfound life is to discover and exude my most unicorn self, my most autonomous self!

So, here I am, world, all 44 years and counting!

Until next time, readers!
